Jack of All Trades -- A Multi-format Asynchronous Tournament

Post by Obsilium » Wed Dec 31, 2014 3:24 pm

Starting in January 2015, wizards will explode. Tournaments in individual game types has been handled adequately by Ped in the tournament client, but never before have we seen a tournament that simultaneously tests players skills in 1v1, 4 player FFA and 2v2. This will change now. Who will become the Jack of All Trades?

The format: Jack of All Trades is a multi-format, asynchronous randomly paired tournament. The tournament has 4 rounds and one final, which will take place in order, so as not to tax players asynchronous game capacities. A player plays 4 asynchronous games in each round, two duels (one hosted, one not hosted), one FFA (4 player) and one 2v2. Pairings will be random, so if you are unlucky enough to be paired against me in every format, make me regret it. After round 2, if 32 or more players take part, ~50% of the field will be eliminated (like in golf, so everybody who has a score equal to the player at 50% will stay, then a few players below that may be randomly selected so as to keep the player number a multiple of 4). Scoring goes as follows:

1v1: 1 point per victory, 0 points for draw and loss
FFA: 2 points for 1st, 1 for 2nd or two way draw, 0 points for other outcomes
2v2: 2 points for winning team, 1 point for draw

The top 4 players after the rounds go to the final, with an undecided method of tiebreaker to be used to distinguish between players with equal point totals. The final will have the same format as the rounds do. The only difference is that the ordering in the final will not be random. It will work as follows, recalling that the host of an asynchronous game plays last:

Duels: Best dueler picks opponent to host against them. Then second best does the same, etc.
FFA: Players pick positions in order of FFA results, i.e., best FFA players chooses first.
2v2: Best 2v2 player gets to pick a partner.

If the final is a tie, then the individual records in each field will be compared. The best overall player in each area gets one tiebreaker point, or a proportional fraction of a tiebreaker point if there is a tie. The player(s) with the most tiebreakers become champions.

Other information:
Games should be played with 20 days per player and 20 turns. After any game is over, send me a screenshot of the victory screen. I will update results and post pairings in this thread, unless Ped is willing to host the scoretable in the Tournament Client. If a player doesn't move for over 10 days without notice, let me know, and I will try to find a replacement player.

Good luck! May the best wizard reign!

EDIT: Currently in Round 2.

yeah count me in,

although this could take a very long time to complete if a lot of players sign up but async should make it more achievable than the PV Open.

at the moment getting the results to display on the L&C in any meaningful format would take quite a bit of programming but I could look at accommodating this type of tournament in the future
