6 Player Match Setups (Team Games)

  • UPDATED TO INCLUDE 2V4 MATCHES IN POST 3

    I'm going to try make a easy to refer to guide of how different team setups can work for the 6 player maps. Hopefully it's of use when people are trying to get these types of games going.

    Firstly for 3v3 matches.

    A Dead Piece of Chaos
    123 vs 456 Is good
    135 vs 246 leaves players 4 and 5 out on a limb

    Crazy Forest
    123 vs 456 will work
    136 v 245 is pretty good in terms of setting a fair turn order

    Here and There
    124 vs 356 this works well or
    126 vs 345 (neither of which is really obvious)
    156 vs 234 if you don't want partners to start together go with this (again not obvious, and while the positioning works, you will have the bolt problem:

    Be very careful on this map as Player 3 is able to perform a turn 1 bolt kill on player 5. And working clockwise around the map, the turn order is 1, 2, 6, 3, 5, 4 - This puts players 6 and 5 at a considerable disadvantage as they're sandwiched between 2 players who start before them.

    Mana Piscine
    123 v 456
    136 v 245
    125 v 346
    156 v 234

    All will work.

    Over the Hollow Hill
    123 vs 456 - 2 teams on opposite sides of the map, it looks like it's been designed for 3v3 being played like this.

    Peace upon Chaos
    135 v 246 with team mates then staggered around the map.

    There's not really a good way to set up 3 v 3 with all team mates next to each other but you can do a variety of setups with 2 team mates for each team together and then the 3rd straight into a standoff. 123 v 456 achieves this an allow the stranded player the best possibility to fly across a gap (or be joined by team mates)

    Plainful Gathering
    123 vs 456 will work but players 3 and 4 are up against it at the start.
    145 vs 236 is a nice alternative.

    Ready for take off
    123 v 456 is the ideal way for 3v3, this is another map that's designed with that setup in mind.

    Techstatic
    123 v 456 will work, but the map isn't really set up for this. (It's a bit like Peace on Chaos that way)
    135 v 246 works better and puts each member of each team with an immediate opponent.

    The Space Between
    123 v 456 is the only way to go for 3v3 here, it's the 3rd map that's designed that way.

    Triple Double
    145 vs 236 That's a bit counter intuitive, but it works.

  • Now for 2v2v2:

    A Dead Piece of Chaos
    12 v 34 v 56
    14 v 25 v 36 both all good.

    Crazy Forest
    13 v 25 v 46 if you want partners together.
    14 v 26 v 35 if you want partners to start opposite each other.
    12v 34 v 56 AVOID as this leaves the 12 pair together whilst the 34 and 56 partners are scattered,

    Here and There -
    12 v 36 v 45
    14 vs 26 vs 35 (solves the turn 1 bolt problem)
    13 v 25 v 46 if you want team mates to not start together.
    12 v 34 v 56 AVOID due to the turn 1 bolt problem

    Mana Piscine
    12 v 45 v 36
    13 v 25 v 46
    14 v 26 v 35

    Over the Hollow Hill
    12 v 34 v 56 - It's not really suited to 2v2v2, but this is fair setup if you want to try it.
    14 v 25 v 36 AVOID as players 2 and 5 get a big advantage in their starting positions.

    Peace upon Chaos
    12 v 34 v 56 - Starting in pairs
    14 v 25 v 36 - Starting opposite
    16 v 23 v 45 - Starting back to back with a gap in between pairs - This actually quite nice if you want to try something different.

    Plainful Gathering
    12 v 34 v 56 is the best way to go for 2v2v2

    Ready for take off
    14 v 25 v 36 is the standard, but any variation of players from 123 paired with players from 456 will work for duels.
    12 v 34 v 56 AVOID as you'll leave 34 in a really weak position.

    Techstatic
    12 v 34 v 56 is good.
    14 v 25 v 36 is also good.
    16 v 23 v 45 - Like Peace of Chaos, this should also work - I haven't tried, but after writing this I'm now about to ;-)

    The Space Between
    16 v 24 v 35 is probably the best way to do it.
    12 v 34 v 56 you could try, but players 3 and 4 will be stranded. (2v2v2 isn't really what this map is about)

    Triple Double
    12 v 34 v 56. - 3 and 4 get to play piggy in the middle.

  • Grab a buddy to play some 2v4

    Recommended setups are in green, but there's a lot to try. Avoid the red

    2v4 matches are pretty versatile here, depending on the difficulty/match setup you want you can go with a ton of options. For the setups below, I'm listing in terms of the easier setups being higher up for each map, and the truly insane ones falling at the bottom.

    NB - If you want an easier version of this play 2v1v1v1v1
    NB2 - If you want to have a different experience of a team game, go with 1v1v4 setting yourself and the other human player as the 1s, but with a view that you'll still team up (Things like Weapons and Magic Woods can't be used by your partner, but some other combos come into play which are equally fun... )

    A Dead Piece of Chaos
    A really nice map for 2v4 this, it's a lot more versatile than you might at first think. Players 1 and 2 are in the middle, as far as there is a middle, on this map, so to that end:

    34 vs 1256 - As easy a setup as you can get for 2v4 on this map, you've got one end of the map, and can take the battle to the AI in stages.
    56 vs 1234 - Slightly harder as your turn order is later.
    45 vs 1236 - You'll be piggy in the middle, but with high terrain and a chance to 2v1 against player 3 or 6 early on.
    14 vs 2356 - You can gang up on player 3
    25 vs 1346 - Likewise you can gang up on player 6
    12 vs 3456 - You'll be piggy in the middle and if you're not quick, you'll lose terrain advantage.
    15 vs 2346 - A diagonal split, you'll need to quickly take out 1 or 2 opponents before meeting up.
    24 vs 1356 - As above.
    36 vs 1245 - Opposite ends of the map, the AI are coming for you.


    Crazy Forest

    12 vs 3456 - One end of the map, work your way across.
    56 vs 1234 - Lets you do the same from the other end, and your starting position plus the fact that you're starting later, makes this a lot tighter.
    Starting as either 13, 24, 46, or 35 will do more or less the same, but with a split turn order.
    23 vs 1456 - Lets you 2v1 against player 1
    14, 45, and 36 let you do similar.
    15 vs 2346 - Lets you have a 2v1 on player 4, but you'll also have a lot of pressure coming at you.
    34 vs 1256 - Is a piggy in the middle battle from the off.
    16 vs 2345 - Leaves you starting diagonally opposite.
    25 vs 1346 - Does the same, but you lose the turn order combos.


    Here and There

    Be very careful on this map as Player 3 is able to perform a turn 1 bolt kill on player 5. And working clockwise around the map, the turn order is 1, 2, 6, 3, 5, 4 - This puts players 6 and 5 at a considerable disadvantage as they're sandwiched between 2 players who start before them.

    You're pretty much starting in a circle here, so lots of similar setups:

    12 vs 3456 - Lets you work your way across the map.
    45 vs 1236 - Is the only other setup that lets you do the same, but beware that turn 1 bolt kill on player 5.
    36 vs 1245 - Puts the turn 1 bolt kill in your favour (If you want a 2v3 then you might as well just play on a 5 player map imho)

    35 vs 1246 - Probably gives you the best piece of terrain (I'd do this if you're playing 2v1v1v1v1, to eliminate that turn 1 bolt kill)
    14 vs 2356 OR 26 vs 1345 provide similar setups.
    16 vs 2345 - Lets you go 2v1 on player 2
    23 vs 1456 OR 34 vs 1256 - Lets you do the same, but arrrgh turn 1 bolt kill advantage again.
    56 vs 1234 - Would also of worked, but turn 1 bolt kill disadvantage now.
    15 vs 2346 - Means the turn order is out and you'll die to turn 1 bolt kill again.


    You basically want players 3 and 5 on the same team, so:
    24 vs 1356 - Works hurrah! And you can gang up on player 1.
    46 vs 1235 - Works and leaves you opposite each other.


    Mana Piscine

    You're in a circle again going around the map.

    12 vs 3456 - Lets you start next to each other and move as a team.
    45 vs 1256 - Let you do similar, but with not quit so good a starting position, and later turn order.
    13, 25, 36 OR 46 - Same gain, but your not able to combo as easily.
    16 vs 2345 - You've a 2v1 gang up on player 3 here.
    34 vs 1256 - You've a 2v1 gang up on player 6
    56 vs 1234 - You've a 2v1 on player 4
    24 vs 1356 - Similar against player 5, but you lose turn order combos (and do you want to be where player 5 is?)
    15 vs 2346 - Likewise against player 3
    14 vs 2356 - Opposite ends of the map, and no turn order combo.
    26 vs 1345 - Similar
    35 vs 1246 - Similar again, but your starting positions are really rough as well.

    Over the Hollow Hill

    As the map is a mirror imagine you've got a few variations on what is essentially the same setup, it basically breaks down as follows. (Also this map is pretty horrible to play against he AI on, given how it reacts to gaps in the map)

    12 vs 3456 - You'll be able to gang up quickly on player 3, and then hopefully be ready for the rest.
    23 vs 1456 - You'll really be able to gang up on player 1, and you've an option to easily move to the middle.
    34 vs 1256 - You've both got a 2v1 battle on, but you can meet up, plus with turn orders together it's easier combos.
    25 vs 1346 - As above, but the turn order isn't helping you either now.
    24 vs 1356 - Now you're on a diagonal.
    35 vs 1246 - Now you're on another diagonal, but with slightly worse turn order.
    16 vs 2345 - Opposite ends of the map.

    Peace upon Chaos

    23 vs 1456 - You'll start together, and face a bottle neck, I mean you'll sweep across the map.
    45 vs 1236 - As above.
    16 vs 2345 - As above.
    12 vs 3456 - You've got a gap between you, but you have got a chance to 2v1 against someone if one of you can jump that gap.
    34 vs 1256 - Likewise
    56 vs 1234 - Same again.
    13 vs 2456 - You can now 2v1 on player 2 if you can get to them.
    24, OR 46 - Similar.
    14 vs 3456 - You'll be opposite each other this time.
    25, OR 36 - Similar.

    So lots of options, the map is still horrible though.



    Plainful Gathering

    12 vs 3456 - You're starting together at one end of the map.
    56 vs 1234 - As above.
    34 vs 1256 - You're piggy in the middle - I love this map/setup for 2v4 matches!
    45 vs 1236 - Gives you a 2v1 on player 6 with turn order combos.
    13 vs 2456 - A 2v1 on player 2 but no turn order combos.
    24 or 35 - Similar
    15 vs 2346 - You're in a line with player 3 between you.
    26 vs 1345 - Similar
    16 vs 2345 - Diagonal opposites, but you've got turn order combos.
    25 vs 1346 - Diagonal opposites, but without turn order combos.

    34 OR 56 - Similar.
    23 vs 1456 - You'll be divided by high terrain, but if one of you can get over it's a 2v1 situation.
    45 or 16 - Similar.
    13 vs 2456 - You might get to gang up on player 2 - At worst it's two 1v1 battles before players 5 and 6 come wading in.
    15, 24, 35, 26, OR 46 - Similar
    14 vs 2356 - Now you'll be opposite.
    25, OR 36 - Similar.

    16 vs 2345 - Diagonal opposites, but you've got turn order combos.
    25 vs 1346 - Diagonal opposites, but without turn order combos.

  • Nice one, good research man. I know some 6way maps can be problematic, so this will help.

    Starting positions seem to hold a big sway on how these 6way maps play out so this guide is pretty important for custom game set up.
