A thematic approach to realms

For Wizard Kings (and higher) to discuss the Realm Editor and the creation of realms.

  • It seems clear that different people want to play realms in different ways.

So how about rather than picking one way for realms to work and leaving a good number of people dissatisfied no matter what that choice is, that instead you introduce a concept of realm themes whereby each realm can operate differently, and the way that it operates ties into the Chaos universe as a whole?

Law realms - These would work as realms work at present. It's equipped mode, the player has full choice over the equipment that they use, and some matches will take place with voids (laws) in place.

Neutral realms - These will run in the basis that the player always begins the realm with no gear or equipment other than the basics, they will then make use of what they aquire as the realm is explored. (Naked wizard mode)

Chaos realms - These run via a random equipped mode. The player had no control over what gear and talismans are used in battle, and must adapt each time to the random gear that they are given on a match by match basis. Any mercs or villagers that do appear are also random (I think that this mode may actually work better without them). When AI appear in this mode they may attack each other in addition to the player.

Classic relams - In these all matches are played under Classic Chaos rules, no mercs or other starting units are allowed within battles. There are no voids, it is an entirely classic game. Variation is given by starting positions, sprites and number of AI opponents only (which could raise beyond 3).

Custom realms - Within these a realm designer is able to set their own specifc rules for the realm. This could include some of the above, but also realm wide voids and bans on Staffs/Talismans Types. I.e 'No Law staffs and no Valour talismans', or 'Growth staffs only'.

Nothing is classed as friendly/competitive or easy/hard, it's just different ways of playing. Players can choose the realms that they enjoy playing, and designers can make the realms that they enjoy making.

  • For me, a thematic approach to Realms would connect deeply to the lore, stories, and motivations of the wizards and humanity finding refuge in Limbo and looking for resources through the scattered fragments of the shattered Earth. Hopefully, there should be some lore vignettes published in the not-too-distant future that will help provide better context for this theme and provide we players a focus by which we can offer ideas that build upon it.

  • Maybe I picked the wrong word in 'thematic' the primary intention was to propose an idea whereby each player got to play the type(s) of realm that they wished to, and each realm designer got the design the realms that they wished to. I think that can tie in with the overall Chaos themes of Law/Neutral/Chaos, but I was more concerned about suggesting a means of letting everyone have their cake and eat it.

  • Imho the easiest way would be to have a genre category for Realms and then simply remove all the restrictions such as Banish Spell and let the Designers denote the victory conditions and whether or not it is to be played in Classic Mode or not.
