You don't let the 2001 person in, but you let everyone who's in up until that point complete if they wish to.
That makes sense. Though it seems statistically probable that each Realm will have at least a few players who start it and never ever complete it because they stop playing the game, or at least walk away from it for a few months.

I still think it's a bad idea to expire hand-crafted realms at all unless they're archived or go into some kind of hall of fame so they can be played indefinitely. Otherwise it means all the effort that someone has put into a realm will eventually go down the gurgler. It also means that if players get tired of designing realms in the future, eventually all realm content will vanish. At the very least remove the player limit until the infrastructure is finished.

I think this is a really good point to make.

The flip side is, how does a realm designer ever edit or improve a realm if it doesn't expire? You can't do it whilst the realm is live if that realm also has a high score table. Imagine if you doubled the number of Wizard Lords after the first 1000 plays, you wouldn't be able to rank people fairly.

After 2000 people complete the realm, prevent new players from starting a realm and add a notice that says, "this realm will expire soon". Remove it after 48 hours.
