Law Mode as the first mode new players see

    So in a Law Mode game where both players play optimally; who wins?

    Is it the player who moves first? - If so, that's no game...

    Or is it the player who started with the better deck, and got luck with those paralyse attacks? - If so then the player only feels that they have more control over the outcome, but in actual fact it's still 'just a dice roll'.

    If someone casts Chaos Shift on turn 1 then they're lessening rng for themselves throughout the rest of the game in Chaos Mode, and the casting cost in Law mode - It's an effective tactic regarless of the mode of play.

    If you attack a Hyrda with enough rats, then you will eventually kill it, again this is regardless of mode. You'll eventually wear down its HP in Law mode, the difference in Chaos mode is because that kill is percentage based then neither player knows when it will die - This for me adds tension, and is the reason why I play Chaos mode. I avoid Law mode like the plague... b'dum!

  • If we compare Chaos mode to a hot and spicy curry - It's not for everyone, but for those who enjoy it's certainly addictive.

    And if we compare Law mode to a salad - Missing a kick, but quite a safe option for those who don't like taking risks.

    The middle ground would be a curried lettuce - There's a reason why restaurants don't offer this dish.

  • Going back to the original topic of the thread...

    CR is at the moment trying to get everyone who is new to the game to go for the salad option...

    Can we please have the Vindaloo at least appearing on the menu with the same level of exposure. That way our diners can make an informed choice, and there's a better chance of them staying for a coffee after the meal.

  • I can confirm that you are given the choice of either Law Mode or Chaos Mode. A friend of mine picked it up a few weeks back and can confirm he was given the choice between Law Mode or Chaos Mode. He didn't see that the game preferred one option over the other, but was going to opt for Law Mode as it sounded more appealing (coming from an X Com veteran that I consider him to be). He enjoys both modes.

  • Let's assume the first thing most new players do is the tutorial or the single player. The first screen they see when doing the single player is always this..

    ..it's the default mode.

    If a new player did, for what ever unlikely reason, switch to chaos mode for their first chaos experience the game won't remember this, it will always keep giving them the default law option ..AND it will always default to giving them invaders, which might even be more problematic than pushing them towards law.

  • It seems to me that CR is still slightly slanted towards promoting Law over Chaos. Law is simply an easier platform to get, it's more familiar to most new players in terms of their experience. So, they get funneled into Law mode, but it lacks the refined balance found in Chaos. Law mode is finite, imo. I played the hell out of it when I first started. I actually couldn't understand why players preferred Chaos, it was bewildering. After several months of Law, though, I reached a point that I suspect is somewhat of a natural phenomenon for a lot of folks, the games got boring and I started to see how imbalanced and cobbled together it was. So, I changed modes and got beat up for awhile, but soon began to see the real magic of the game. Changing modes like that is not easy and I suspect most players will simply ghost at that point. Meanwhile, the trickle of new players coming in that favor Chaos mode get frustrated at the lack of player base, so most of them ghost as well.

    I am sure Law mode generates some revenue, but it's a dysfunctional flow that ultimately filters players out of the game, weakening the player base, and dragging down all known particles in existence.

    Yeah, this needs to be changed so there is no choices already made. Beyond the issue of default mode, chances are a new player wont know what it means to allow an invader. Allying alot a see it often a new player not knowing why there is another player controlling the enemy and not the Ai.
