Idea: Talismans for realms

Discussion and questions about the latest version of Chaos Reborn. Not for bugs, but for comments about the game play.

  • Just a random thought: What if you had talismans that were specifically designed to work in realms, which would mitigate some of the grinding of chaos' mechanics with the strategic layer?

I know some complaints had to do with the loss of story mercs to things like turn 1 decree/vengeance. What if their was a talisman that was specifically designed to mitigate this? for example you could possibly have the talisman that could only be used on mercs with names that caused them to not die by decree/vengeance spells, but instead be just out for the fight.

Another might be the ability to gain a bit of extra loot when you defeat a lord.

Another could be the ability to keep a creature that you've subverted in a battle (in your merc roster).

You could equip them in the slots like usual, but in PVP games they simply wouldn't register (treating it like an empty slot)
You wouldn't have to program AI to use them either as they'd be specifically designed for the player to use in realms.

  • Maybe a re-direct talisman? A talisman that forces magical attacks to target the player if the player is targetable? So, not a taboo, but puts the risk on the player from the vulnerable mercs - as long as player is targetable.

  • I think what you're looking for here with realm talismans is potentially a good idea, but if it were being implemented I'd maybe look to create something new which is designed specifically for realms as opposed to creating more talismans. You'd have the potential for greater flexibility that way, and less confusion with overlaping terms.

Re Mercs dying - If the player can hold a talisman which means that their mercs never die/or can never be targetted by such and such an attack then you're effectively turning those mercs into super powered varients of summoned creatures for the purpose of battles, and that would then adversely affect the battle dynamics. Worst case;imagine a pegasus mount which can't be targetted by magic attacks... As someone who dislikes the presence of mercs in battles, I wouldn't want to see that, mercs are already turn 1 present and 100 % casts (just that makes battles lopsided enough).

I think a better way of handling named merc death could be to let the realm designer set a flag against named mercs which gives them the potential to allow those mercs to have a number of 'lives'. Effectively, the merc would be removed from the battle in which they are slain, but continue to be in the player's party for subsequent battles or encounters until that total sum of lives had expired.
